He’s back. After taking a break in April of 2022, there was a teaser for the third Sonic film, including Jim Carrey’s sinister laughter as Doctor Robotnik. If that clue didn’t show you he was back, he was also announced to return for Sonic the Hedgehog’s third film. James Eugene Carrey has come back from his retirement, which happened around April 1st of 2022. The tweet marking his comeback was posted around very early February of this year. He had taken a 22-month long break, but Carrey had found his script in golden ink. Carrey put out a tweet stating, “You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from me is only a #shadow of things to come.”
Spoiler alert, around the end of the second movie, Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to go into his Super State, and demolishes the Death Egg Robot that Robotnik had created after harnessing the power of the Master Emerald. As the Death Egg Robot fell, Robotnik fell with it, most likely falling miles to the ground. That fall should have been his end. But if Jim Carrey’s returning, that means Robotnik is too. The story is most likely following the game from 2001, Sonic Adventure 2. The sequel to the first Sonic Adventure, it also introduces Shadow the Hedgehog into the beloved game series. Shadow the Hedgehog was first teased to be in the Sonic Cinematic Universe in the second movie’s end credit scene, which was explained to be named Project Shadow and is accurate to the game series. The first movie had a bit of the Sonic the Hedgehog game plot. And the sequel introduced both Tails and Knuckles. Knuckles is getting his own series soon, which will be released April 26th. The third movie is going to be released in December and the sequel has elements of both Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (the games).
Going back to Jim Carrey in the first film, if you haven’t watched that one yet, he was portrayed as a U.S government official, sending his machines to find and neutralize Sonic. Sonic was seen as a threat to the United States. Obviously, he was defeated and sent to the Mushroom Planet by the end of it. The second film shows him finally coming back, with Knuckles, and he fell to his “doom” by the end of that film.
Overall, Carrey just needed a break from the film industry. But he’s making his comeback in the third film, and possibly for other, future movies. So I think his comeback will be great.
