Freya Skye, born in Buckinghamshire, England, is a fifteen year old singer, song-writer and actress who started her career at the very young age of five, debuting her first song “I Love the Way” in 2021 when she was just twelve. Most recently, Skye has been busy filming Zombies 4, the fourth installment in Disney’s Zombies series while also having just released “Can’t Fake It,” her latest album.
When the Disney star and rising singer-songwriter Freya Skye got asked about her latest single “Can’t Fake It,” she was incredibly excited and described the process being “really fun.”
“It was a bit earlier, honestly, in my songwriting experiences,” as she was going into it.
“I remember starting the session, and the writers who I was in with, they were like talk to us a little bit about things that are going on in your life right now, which kind of gave me the opportunity to talk about how I was feeling.”
She continued, “I remember talking about a situation, and how I really wanted to write a song from the perspective of myself, talking to family members or friends, and constantly going about the same situation, and how I wish I could get over this! But I physically can’t and that’s where the whole kind of concept of “can’t figure out” where it’s like, I can’t pretend I’m over it because I’m really not.”
For Skye, this track is a reality. She expressed the frustration she was going through of not being able to pretend she was okay when she obviously was not.
Freya’s love and passion for music comes from all the fun she had watching shows and movies she grew up with when she was younger. As she stated “I honestly think that a big part of me getting into music was watching music like Descendants, Zombies, High School Musical, Hannah Montana, and Victorious. I think all of those really inspired me and watching them and seeing all these people singing and dancing every single day.” Those Disney and Nickelodeon shows really had a great impact on Freya’s life.
“I wish I could go to a school like the High School Musical school, that looks like so much fun. I would learn the songs and sing along and get the costumes,” she says. Now, as she gets ready to get on stage for the upcoming Zombies: World Collide tour, she hopes to give fans the same feeling she had as a kid, she wants to inspire people. “I think, I hope that that’s going to be the same kind of immersive experience for people who can come and watch the show.” Freya is finally living out her dream and it is so great she has this goal.
When Freya was asked who inspired her the most, she confessed that her list of inspiring influencers are growing but for right now her biggest inspiration is Gracie Abrams. “I love all her songs,” Freya stated while her mood brightened as she spoke about Gracie. “Something I admire so much about her is just like her lyricism. Every single song just feels like a conversation with a melody.”
“It’s so grounded and relatable, so like The Secret Of Us (Gracie’s most recent album) and some of my favorite songs like, “That’s So True” and “I Love You, I’m Sorry” and “I Miss You, I’m Sorry,” her connection to Gracie Abrams’s music is very strong “It’s nice to know that someone else relates to things that I do, and I’m sure millions of other people do as well.” “She’s one of my big ones, for sure” Freya states.
“I honestly think there can be a lot of doubt and negativity when it comes to songwriting,” Freya says after being asked what the biggest challenge is for her when she is writing songs and what she feels is the most challenging aspect of that is. “You’re always kind of questioning whether what you’re writing is good because it’s so personal, it’s so vulnerable.”
Freya then compared, “If you think like Central Cee’s music, it is worlds apart from like Lana Del Rey’s, they’re so different. And I’m sure some people love one and all love the other. I think it can be so personal, and it’s really acquired to your taste. So I think, coming out of sessions. This feels very me. But will other people think this?”
She wonders if other people will connect with her music like she does and goes on to tell us that “trusting your own gut and knowing if you like it, there will be people out there who do” which is some great advice to younger singer songwriters.
Lastly, Freya Skye gave a powerful message to those younger singers and songwriters who want to be just like her. “As one door closes, another one definitely opens.” and continues on saying “Rejection, it can be a huge part, and just knowing to keep going and not to give up and knowing that there is something for you out there, there will be that perfect role and every single no is one step closer to a yes. Just keep persevering, as long as you have a great time and love it, that is all that matters.”
