Have you ever just felt overwhelmed in class? The room is loud from everyone talking over each other, either too stuffy or too cold, all of a sudden you can hear the people being rowdy outside, and on top of all that you’re supposed to be focused on your classwork. In this situation one may be wonder what things would help them relax? Well I have one simple answer. The lights being turned off.
Now, I understand how your first thought may be how silly this sounds. Why would being in the dark help me? But that’s just the thing, thanks to the windows and adjustable blinds you can still have more than enough light without having to deal with the harsher artificial light. I can attest to this through my own experiences at this school. On average, I find it easier to focus on my work and relax when the teacher turns off their lights. I’m sure some of you reading this have had Mr. Tootla or visited his class and noted the calming atmosphere of his classroom. Of course that is in large part thanks to his presence, but I really feel that his choice of lighting is also another important factor. Rather than turn the lights all the way on he only has them on in the back where it’s farthest from his desk, making it easier to see. Primarily though, he takes advantage of the natural light he’s able to let in through opening the blinds just a little. It’s such a small thing, but I think it really makes a world of difference.
Don’t just take my word for it though, several studies have been done by psychologists proving the benefits of natural/dimmer lighting over the fluorescent yellow. Not only can it enhance your mood, but even your creativity and cognitive performance. Consequently, it’s also been proven that too much light can be overwhelming and boost your stress levels. All of this makes more sense when you stop and realize that most of us don’t use lights during the day when we’re at home. Even at night people opt for dimmer lighting via leds or a lamp rather than the lights built into the room.
Lastly I’d like to leave you guys with this. Generally speaking, a school’s top priority is helping each individual succeed and reach their maximum potential. So, imagine the success you could achieve if you were afforded that extra mental clarity that comes from the natural lighting.
