Have you watched the Halloween classic “The Babadook”. If you are a fan of horror movies I bet that this movie will interest you. Essie Davis plays the lead role as Amelia Vanek in this 2014 Australian psychological horror thriller, which was written by Jennifer Kent. The narrative was inspired by Kent’s 2005 short film “Monster,” which made 10 million dollars even though Kent only had a $2 million budget. The movie does not have an age rating as it was created in Australia but it is advised that people over the age of 13 watch this movie.
The movie starts with introducing the main characters and the setting in which everything is taking place. Amelia Vanek, the main character, is a widowed mother who finds it difficult to care for her widowed child. Samuel, her six-year-old son, exhibits very unpredictable behavior that influences his actions and demeanor. Samuel asks his mother to read him a book one night, and he chooses Minister Babadook. Opening it, the book starts to convey a tale, almost like it was casting something. His mother closes it out of terror, not realizing that she has inadvertently summoned an evil force. Samuel says he can still see the monster, but his mother ignores him because she is in denial. The narrative proceeds with Samuel and his mother battling the monster and figuring out how to resolve the situation.
I recently watched this film, and as a horror movie fan, I felt it was a great classic. The movie was thrilling, suspenseful, and one I don’t regret watching. The film moves a little slowly at first, but that helps create the sense that comes and it’s worth the payoff that comes in the end. The way the movie opens with the history of Samuels fathers grabs your interest and heightens the suspense throughout the narrative. I don’t usually get scared easily, but this movie made me jump a few times and had me questioning what was going to happen next. Though the monster’s graphics aren’t as good as those in more recent films due to the film’s age, they nevertheless performed a great job of depicting the story. All things considered, the film was entertaining, and I urge anyone who enjoys horror to see it.
