Color guard is a performing arts activity that combines the use of flags, sabers, rifles and dances. You may see our color guard performing at football games in the bleachers and on the field marching with the band. You will also see color guard dancing along with the songs the band plays.
Victoria Roxas, 6th grader, is in color guard.
“The funnest thing I have done in colorguard is learning the tosses and doing the dances,” said Roxas.
”I like color guard because it is really fun and I like performing at football games, marching and dances,” she added.
Some of the routines color guard does with the flags are drop spins which has the flag come up and then down, flourishes which are basically drop spins but after one you twist your wrist for the flag to go in front and behind and you repeat it. Extensions are when you extend one arm out and move your wrist so the flag will go front and back, and carbs are when you put your flag to the side of you and put it in front of you cross your arm and then put it behind your head and cross your arm and then go back to your starting position.
Catalina Vierjin, 8th grader, is also in color guard.
“My favorite thing about color guard is performing in front of people and having a lot of fun experiences,” said Vierjin.
“The funnest thing I have done in color guard is competitions,” Vierjin added.
“When I’m performing in front of a big crowd I look for an empty section so I don’t get scared,” she said.
That visual trick can be a huge help if you get nervous or don’t like performing in front of a huge crowd.
Some of the dances that color guard does when the band plays them are Hey Baby, 7 Nation, So Proud, Go Big. You may also see color guard performing a dance. You also see the cheerleaders performing called “Go Go Go Go You Mighty Lobos.”
