Benson Boone is a global pop sensation who became popular by sharing his music on TikTok. Currently, his most popular song is “Beautiful Things” which is placed at number 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Boone’s music combines both a classic pop and a more electric guitar sound. Boone’s X (formerly known as Twitter) bio “just a happy guy writing sad songs” perfectly encapsulates his combination of sad and heartfelt lyrics with upbeat tunes.
Originally I did not care for Boone Boone’s music; I learned about him through posters that were sent to Journalism and we listened to his music there. I heard a quick snippet of his song “Ghost Town” and thought I had made my mind up about disliking him. But after hearing “Beautiful Things” on the radio and TikTok it began to grow on me. I followed him on Instagram and learned that he would be dropping a new album and this intrigued me. I patiently waited for it to drop and when it did, I was ecstatic.
The album titled Fireworks & Rollerblades opens with a piano song titled “Intro,” the song is very short and sweet and Boone really showcases the range that Boone can sing in. The song fades into “Be Someone,” which is a very upbeat song and has happy lyrics about wanting to be there for someone. Fireworks & Rollerblades generally has a very poppy sound to it but the song “Cry” puts a twist on this by beginning with a slower intro but then abruptly becoming an upbeat song. “Forever and a Day” remains slow until the very end of the song and has very heartfelt lyrics. “Drunk in My Mind” is my favorite song on the album because Boone’s voice caters to the song and is reminiscent of the pop-rock sound of the Arctic Monkeys song “Fluorescent Adolescent.” Another good song from the album is “Slow It Down.” This song has a more raspy tone to it and makes it slightly more aggressive than the other songs in the album.
Boone’s new album manages to combine a variety of sounds and do it well; his voice spans across a variety of genres. This makes Fireworks & Rollerblades a very fun listening experience. Boone is currently on a world tour with his next concert being on May 23, 2024, in Antwerp, Belgium. Boone is a rising pop star and will hopefully see more world tours after this one.
