Last February, Netflix released their new show called One Day, starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. This show is based on a novel, which is also titled One Day, written by David Nicholls. The show has 14 episodes, and I binge-watched them over the span of two days, and honestly, I loved them so much. It made me feel so many things, but the main feeling I felt was stress, but the good kind. It was the kind of stress that had me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. Along with stress, the show made me feel happy, sad, and also left me squealing at times, so you know it’s good.
The show follows two best friends named Dexter Mayhew, played by Goodall, and Emma Morley, played by Mod. The two had their first official meet up in 1988. The two of them went to the same school, and finally got to know each other the night of their graduation. Right off the bat, they have amazing chemistry and are immediately drawn to each other in a way. Over the course of the 14 episodes, Dexter and Emma lead their own different lives, face their different challenges, and also, of course, navigate their sort of “complicated” relationship.
Something interesting that caught my eye in this show is that each episode starts on July 15 of a different year each time. For example, episode one starts on July 15, 1988. Episode two then starts on July 15, 1989, and that’s how it goes on for the rest of the series. This stood out to me, as we are skipping a year between every episode, but thankfully the show does a really good job at giving an idea of what they’ve been up to over the past year without having to make separate episodes for it. Since the show does a good job at catching viewers up and simply making it known how a character ended up where they are, you don’t really feel like you had a year time jump at all.
Each new episode has something new to bring, so it’s always refreshing. One thing that remains the same though is the two main characters. Even during their lows, it is undeniable that the two care about each other a lot, and that’s what I love about it. The love they have for each other, whether it’s platonic or romantic, is so strong and is what gets the two of them through hard times. This is something that is easier to portray on paper, since you can type out a characters’ thoughts and overall the characters’ feelings towards anything and everything. In a show, you have to show it, which I think the actors do a great job of doing.
Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod are great actors in my opinion. They portray the characters’ feelings so well. Watching them cry makes me want to cry too, and their line delivery as well is so good. Mod plays Emma so well, and genuinely I don’t see anyone else playing Emma that good. Emma has such a special and unique personality, and Mod does such a great job portraying that. Woodall and Mod also portray the love that these two characters have so well, and I think that’s why whenever something bad happens to these characters I actually feel sad. They’re so good at acting that their scenes make me feel so many emotions.
Overall, One Day is a very good show to watch and I highly recommend it. It’ll take you on a rollercoaster of emotions, but in a good way. There is something for everyone in this show, and I’m sure a lot of people might find something they relate to, but if not, it’s still a good watch. It is available on Netflix, and is rated TV-MA.
