Rancho Dominguez is great, but like any other school, there’s always room for improvement. As for what improvements are needed, what better crowd to ask rather than the students at our school themselves? The students make the school, so it’s their voices that should be heard. I asked around to see what students think the school needs improving on, and this is what they said.
Solash Villa, 8th grade, said a number of things. “I feel like they should improve on the bathrooms since they’re always dirty and need cleaning. They should clean the stairs too. They also need to improve on sports and school activities for the middle schoolers, since there’s barely any for us.” Villa also said, “We also need better food here, both lunch food and student store food. At the student store, there should be more options of snacks for kids to buy.”
Adam Reed, 12th grade, said, “I’ve been here for three years, and I think there are many things that this school should improve. The first thing is actually trying to understand the students and what they want instead of what they ‘need.’ Also, I think there are too many counselors that don’t do anything. There are a lot of social workers in this school that don’t need to be here, and I think that’s cutting into the budget. The school should also listen to the students since we are what make this school. The staff aren’t nearly as important as the students are since our voices are the loudest. It hasn’t been in the past but it should be.”
Dior Anderson, 7th grade, said, “I think the school needs to improve on our environment. It’s not safe, it’s not clean, and I feel like we need to improve on having everyone help out. Everyone at the school should help out with stuff such as cleaning up because I know the janitors are doing a lot, but we should all still help out. If we all play our part then our school could definitely be better.”
Aubrey Gregory, 10th grade, said, “Something I don’t like about the school that needs improving is the school food. Some of it makes me feel like I don’t want to eat because it doesn’t look good. It’s also not that good for the teachers either since I know a lot of teachers have to go out and buy stuff since the school doesn’t provide lunch for them, so that’s something I believe the school should work on.”
Hector Vidal, 10th grade, said, “One thing I don’t like about the school that needs improvement is probably the lack of funding for school supplies. For example, in my Spanish class we don’t even have scissors anymore so it’s really hard to get work done. I feel like we also need more funding for sports and everything. I remember last year we had an old net for volleyball; it wasn’t that big of a problem but it’s just something that maybe should be improved on. Also maybe some better school lunch too because sometimes some of the lunch here is abominable and horrible so I can’t even eat it, but yeah that’s about it.”
