The flashy, exciting, and biggest sports event for the US every year, this year’s Super Bowl is the 58th rendition and was predicted to be the biggest event on television this year. Every year the Super Bowl is played in early February and is televised not only nationwide but to many parts of the world.
This year’s Super Bowl is one of the biggest televised events in American history, and the most viewed Super Bowl ever with an average of 123.4 million people. It was broadcasted in the US on CBS. Being the most hyped and popular by viewership ever it had to be one of the greatest Super Bowls, right?
Super Bowl 58 was played by the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs which ended up as a defense-heavy game. This Super Bowl was a very boring game and was only fueled by the end. With big names on both sides of the ball like Patrick Mahomes, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffery, and Travis Kelce you would be led to believe this would be an offensive shootout. What we actually got was a lackluster performance by both teams and a very disappointing series of commercials.
Firstly, the game itself. The national anthem was played, and the fans were rowdy. Being in California the 49er fan base was hyped up for the second match-up of the Chiefs vs 49ers in the Super Bowl. Well it ended up being sad like the first one.
First quarter started with the 49ers getting the ball and they had a promising start until they fumbled. The Chiefs got it and they fumbled too. Drives like these would plague the first and second quarter and it ended at 10-3, San Francisco up.
This game was too much of a defensive standoff, and it happened on the most hyped day. With half the people watching for the game and the other for the ads, food, and halftime show, at least make it worthy of our time.
Following Usher’s halftime show, the second half started. It ended up being the same performance as the first half in quarter three. It started to pick up and the Chiefs led 13-10. By the fourth, it ended with a kick by the Chiefs which sent it to OT 19-19. The 49ers had a promising drive but were stopped short by Spagnuolo’s defense, and they kicked going up 22-19. The Chiefs then had Mahomes do what he has done to the Bills and lead a game-winning drive. Capped off by a touchdown catch by Mecole Hardman with three seconds left, the Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl with Patrick Mahomes this year.
Tragedy struck the world that day. After a long season and promising careers ended we were left to see the up-and-coming next Tom Brady. He’s only 28, and has surpassed the likes of Peyton Manning and almost even the 49er’s own Joe Montana. This has to be one of the most boring Super Bowls in recent history.
Most of these people were here for four things: advertisements, food, halftime, and Taylor Swift. The only one to fully deliver is Swift, because of the NFL’s constant exposure of her in an attempt to make some extra side cash. Speaking of cash we should be entitled to compensation after that game. Watching all that just for what everyone thought would happen: Mahomes winning another Super Bowl.
Super Bowl 58 is only the second overtime game in Super Bowl history, also making it one of the longest Super Bowls by play time. Whether you like it or not, we may have to acknowledge the fact that the NFL will go through evil again at the hands of one man: Patrick Mahomes. The Super Bowl was fun, but we wait until next year for another game in the big scene.
