Kanye decided to drop his 11th studio album, a collaboration album with Ty Dolla Sign, on February 10 and a lot of social media reviewers have not been reviewing it due to his past controversies. Many reviewers I’ve seen like well-known music reviewer Anthony Fantano also known as “The Needle Dropper” decided not to give a rating for the album or an opinion. He has criticized the album just like many others from TikTok, and some reviewers on YouTube have refused to review it because of the recent Kanye claims and comments these past two years.
The comments led to Kanye losing many of his endorsements such as Adidas (with his famous Yeezy brand), Gap and Balenciaga, and also led to having his social media accounts suspended or being forced to deactivate his Instagram up until 2023, eight months after the backlash. He then started working on the collaboration album with Ty Dolla Sign, posting a video working on the song “Back to Me” when they were planning to release the album in January. But due to a one-month delay and having trouble clearing samples it ended up releasing on February 10.
Due to his past comments, not many have given the album a chance. Some have given it honest and decent reviews, others have either refused to review or just bash the album in general. Doesn’t the art need to be separate from the person? Everyone should still give it a fair review no matter what they think of Kanye. Yeah, people are entitled to their own opinions, but what he has said in the past should not affect how the album should be looked at.
