College application deadlines are coming up for some major colleges, and just the month before, October is College Awareness Month. As the name suggests, it shoves college in your face as most schools will present it to you in some way, shape or form, especially if you’re a junior or senior. For example, our school has a place for anything college related called the Lobo Center. We have designated advisors and counselors Ms. Parra, Ms. Sierra, and Ms. Alvarez led by Mr. Viveros to help promote and spread college awareness.
“It’s a time to give our students awareness for not just colleges but also careers, GPAs, knowing things that are important to take like the PSAT, and helping students with their college application,” said Mr. Viveros. During this month, it’s prime time to get active on your applications and scholarships.
“To be proactive, students should always consult with counselors, ask questions on their career choices/considerations, make up any D’s and once a semester ask your college counselor questions to help guide you towards goals,” said Mr. Viveros.
The Lobo Center staff are always here to help with guidance and anything college related, especially juniors and seniors with their college applications.
Princess Romero, senior, said, “College apps are going okay, I feel great about the applications but I just haven’t made it past the first part of it. The part where I needed to put in my grades also stopped me because of how my old school did grades.”
This is a recurring problem with a lot of seniors; the first part of college applications is just general information, it’s easy. After that, depending on what colleges you’re applying to, you might be required to fill in written answers or enter your classes and grades throughout all of high school, one by one.
Angel Yniguez, another senior, also said, “My applications are okay right now, I’m doing UCs and CSUs. I’ve been working on them with our advisors from EAOP and ETS in the Lobo Center. It’s a lot to handle as a senior, especially if you have AP or honors while doing the apps at the same time. It’s even worse if you’re doing sports. It’s very stressful but I think I do need it to look good for the applications.”
EAOP stands for Early Academic Outreach Program managed by our UCLA advisor Ms. Parra and ETS is Educational Talent Search managed by Ms. Sierra. They are both programs to personally help you with college readiness and just your future path in general.
The Lobo Center is open almost everyday and for to students anytime who have questions or require assistance with their future.
