13 Reasons Why
The very famous neflix original series 13 Reasons why and a review from one of our fellow staff writers.
If You Want to Know the Truth Just Press Play. Based on the 2007 young adult novel written by Jay Asher is Netflix original “13 Reasons Why.” This 13 part series covers suicide, teen bullying, drunk driving, depression and sexual assault all in one. Many including myself were excited to see what the show brought to the table. These topic are heavy to take on for some people, and most definitely shouldn’t be taken so lightly. This show is for mature audiences. It has received tons of positive feedback since its release on March 31, 2017 and the viewers fell in love with the tragic story of Hannah Baker.
The story of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) is certainly not very pleasing to hear, but it is one to bring you to tears. It tells the story of a teenager who lost her life due to continuous harassment in school. Hannah left behind a box of audiotapes along with a map, on these tapes it discusses in detail the 13 reasons why she committed suicide. Each tape is focused on one person who contributed to the loss of her life. The story of Hannah Baker however is told through the eyes of Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette). He is put to listen to each tape and is instructed to go to the places on the map. As much as he doesn’t want to listen to them, he has a part of him that is curious about the tapes. This is a show that will most certainly never be forgotten. However, as intense as the series is and how good it is, it also has its bad part. Episode 13 is quite dangerous for those who are struggling much like Hannah Baker was, this could trigger someone. So I personally suggest to watch the show slowly, and when it gets to this part if you feel its too much in anyway fast forward it.
It describes so many serious topics that need to be addressed. Bullying, suicide, depression, drunk driving and sexual assault are extremely important issues that can’t be silenced. It is important to address these situations because there is always someone out there that is in need of help. What 13 Reasons Why teaches is how important it is to care for one another. It also the biggest lesson of all, to watch what you say even the littlest thing can drive a person to the edge. I truly love this show, for its many lessons it has, as well as how well they address serious
issues. It is important to keep these issues in mind to help others and be well aware of what could happen.
SPOILERS AHEAD I just wanted to take the time to fangirl with the many others who have already watched the show. BRYCE, Bryce (Justin Prentice) is the one of the many people who made me so mad. It irritates me how he says “If that’s rape, then every girl at this school wants to be raped,” so calmly without a care in the world. Let’s just hope that if there’s a season two he goes to jail. That’s not all though Jeff Atkins (Brandon Larracuente), is my favorite character. He just wanted to focus on school, get his grades up, have fun , and play sports. Yet, he had to pass away in an accident. He deserved better and I know I’m not the only one who thinks so. I have so many questions after the end of the season. For example, what does Tyler (Devin Druid) do with the firearm? What does Mr. Porter (Derek Luke) do to the tapes? Does Alex (Miles Heizer) still live? What happened to Jessica after she told her dad of what happened to her? There are also so many theories that make so much sense but we are all still left to question. There are YouTube videos that talk about all of this, if there are parts that don’t make sense, most videos will explain it. SPOILERS OVER
