More Than Just a Bad Dream

You’re in a room all by yourself. Everything seems dark and blurry. You start to feel uneasy and woozy, then you see a figure; something that looks unhuman but you’re not very sure. The longer you stared at it the closer it has gotten to you. As it extends one of its arms towards you a bright light appears, while hearing your heartbeat as if it were about to burst or fall out from your chest you realize it was all but a dream or as everyone calls it a nightmare.

Nightmares are not out of the ordinary, anyone can have them. They can continuously reoccur throughout your life, but do you ever wonder why they happen? Many state that nightmares can be caused by stress or even trauma. For those that haven’t experienced either one, no one seems to know the reason behind having dreams. Psychologists tend to call it idiopathic nightmares which mean it’s rather normal.

Also, nighmares have proven to give you a more creative and imaginitive mind. For example, Edgar Allan Poe’s nightmares inspired him to do part of his famous works; he was artistic and very creative.

Another question people seem to ask is how to we leave or control one of our nightmares; there is a solution for that. One, make a dream journal, write down how you felt or what you have seen and experienced. Two, look around, try to open a door or look at your hands to see they are even there. And finally try to read something. If the words don’t appear to you, you’d then be aware that you’re in a dream and could probbaly gain control of what happens in them.

“A nightmare I can remember the most was when I was in Middle School and I remember these huge waves coming down the street and coming towards me. I got scared and started running and ran into this huge pyramid where water just started pouring in also. I tried looking for my mom but she was trapped. That’s when I woke up.”

“So my parents took me to see Jaws in a drive in theater; just imagine this huge screen. For about two or three days I would have occurring nightmares of the shark. It might’ve gone as long as a week, I also had nightmares when we went to see Orca about a killer whale that was similar to Jaws and it was the same concept again.”

“When I was younger I had a dream that I was on my street and this car was chasing me and I had my little brother with me in a stroller. As we saw the little yellow low rider come closer and closer to us we started running.”
