Big Quake Could Occur at Any Moment

An earthquake ranging from an 8.0 or higher is bound to hit Southern California in the future, it is known as the “Big One”. The earthquake is expected to strike from the San Andreas Fault, devastating every land in its large radius including areas like San Francisco and LA. This is predicted to cause billions of dollars worth of obstruction to multiple structures, and city facilities, not including the thousands of people that will die and be left injured.

“I’m worried because you never know what can happen to you, people such as your friends and family can get hurt or die,” said senior, Joshua Banal.

Predicting exactly when the earthquake will occur is nearly impossible given that it can happen at any time and the odds increase every day. Even with all the warnings and news showcased of the effects of the aftermath of the “Big One,” many SoCal residential areas are still unprepared.

“I’m not really prepared yet…I have some supplies but it’s not enough. We have canned goods but we need more water, and other basic survival supplies such as a flashlight and a weapon,” said senior Carlos Fermin.

Preparation is the number one key to avoiding the predicted deaths, and damages the earthquake may cause.

Prior to the earthquake, every house should have the essential backup of packaged/canned food, water, and clothing ready in a safe place. Its also good to consider preparing things such as tents and sleeping bags incase you need to take shelter outdoors. In addition, just like how schools practice the “great shake drill” to avoid injuries in school premises, every family should have a solid plan on what to do when the earthquake happens.

“I think we should take more precautionary effects and more efforts to make sure that when it comes we won’t have as many detrimental effects to our overall population and health, ” said Junior Jasmine Taylor.

During an earthquake, the drop and cover method will protect from falling debris. It’s also very important to stay calm and focus on what you need to do afterward.

After the earthquake is when one needs to be very cautious of their surroundings. One simple step could be the difference between life and death. Meaning that you should be aware of walls, floors, and ceilings as you walk to safety.

Overall, the coming of  “the big one” is unpredictable so the best thing we can do is prepared as much as we can. By preparing as we’re told, we can lessen the possible deaths, injuries, or damages that will inevitably come upon us.
