Recently Netflix released a movie titled “Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.” For those who don’t know, Invader Zim is an old Nickelodeon TV show that was created by Jhonen Vasquez. The show followed a little green alien named Zim. He had a mission to infiltrate and conquer earth with his robot companion but, the only thing that was standing in his way was a boy named Dib who was the only one who could see that he was an alien. As a big fan of the old show I was really excited to watch the movie. They were bringing back the same voice actors and animators. Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus was a good nostalgic movie to watch. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of the TV show. This movie is not for everyone but if you are curious about the movie I suggest you give it a try, especially if you like watching kids cartoons.

Invader Zim only had two seasons on television. In March of 2001 the show first aired and it was targeted towards kids in their early teens. However older teens and many adults seemed to like the show. Also many of the kids who liked Spongebob and The Fairly OddParents didn’t like the show. So Nickelodeon decided to cancel the show leaving sixteen unfinished episodes. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the shows cancellation. From the show being too graphic for kids, to the terrible timing of the destruction of Earth plot with the September 11 attacks. There have been many rumors as to why the show was cancelled. Many fans of the show demanded more episodes which eventually led to the airing of the second season. However as ratings stayed low it led to the final cancellation of the show. As the years go by with reruns of the show, it became of cult classic. Especially with the little spastic robot that became the shows mascot.

The last airing of the show was on August 19th, 2006. It took 11 years (2017) for the release of Nickelodeon’s release of the teaser of the movie. Many people along with myself became extremely excited. Eventually the movie came out on Netflix on August 16, 2019. The whole 13 year wait had many people excited for the movie. Since the movie had the same voice actors and animators the movie felt like I was watching the original TV show. The movie even picked at its cancellation with referencing how long Zim hasn’t appeared in Dib’s neighborhood. The basic plot is Zim finally returns from “phase one” and tries to take over the earth. Which he is successful at, and you follow Dib as his sister, Gaz, as they try to stop him and save humanity.

While I watched the movie, the only thing that bothered me was the new animation and style of the cartoon. It became more rounded and less sharp which got rid of it’s grungy feel. But that is more of a personal preference. Otherwise the movie was great and felt like it didn’t change at all. If you feel like you won’t get the plot because you never watched the TV show, you don’t have to worry since the show fills you in on what the basic plot is. It’s rated TV-Y7-FV (7 and older).
